Dubstep for the Weekend

During the 4th and 5th September, Point Blank continues its Pro Producer Weekend series from their studios in London; this time with a focus on Dubstep production, using Ableton Live. Ben Westbeech to Give Music Industry Masterclass at Point Blank

The latest in our series of VIP Masterclasses comes from man of the moment Ben Westbeech. Ben will be joining us here at the college on Tuesday 17th August at 5pm to answer your questions.

Ben is a DJ, musician, producer, and vocalist whose musical output spans hip-hop, house, drum'n'bass and everything in between. His track 'So Good Today' was the first single on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings. He’s currently recording an album for Strictly Rhythm and has collaborated with a host of artists including Rusko, Professor Green, Jazzanova, DJ Marky, Henrick Schwarz, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Pezzner and more.

His exciting live sets, showcase his impressive array of talents and are definitely not to be missed! You can check him out performing on "Later with Jools Holland' in the video below.

Remix Pro Producer Course Launches in August!

Remixes have always been a crucial part of a producer's armoury, and they often hold the key to the first major breakthrough into mainstream conciousness for underground artists. The music industry has become awash with remix competitions, and remix swap opportunities over the last few years. Competitions make sense for all parties involved; labels get to pick the best out of hundreds of remixes at little or no cost to themselves and producers have the chance to get their music released and heard by a whole new audience. Remix swaps are seen as a cheap way to add credibility to releases, and again, for the artists to gain exposure to a fresh set of listeners.

Student Diary - Getting to grips with the mix-down

Coming towards the tail end of the Introduction to Logic module it is time to learn how to properly mix down our tracks in order to make them sound as balanced, clear, and punchy as possible.

Once again I was itching to get to this lesson because I recognised that my mixes were not sounding nearly as good as the records I buy and listen to. I had tried incorporating a couple of my tunes into my sets when playing out on big sound systems and it was immediately obvious that there was much scope for improvement on the mix-down. As you may have realised yourself, any part of a mix that sounds iffy at a relatively low volume on a pair of studio monitors will be amplified and sound increasingly more obvious as the size of the sound system increases. It's a bit like slicing a shot in golf... the stronger the headwind you are hitting into, the more viciously the ball will curve away from its intended target.

So, I understood the theory and purpose of the mix-down; the importance of using dynamic processors such as 'eq', 'compressors' and 'limiters', but I was struggling to get to grips with the correct practises when using these, and the complex terminology and elements of mathematics involved. How do the various parameters affect the sound exactly? How do you calculate ratio and threshold? I was unsure whether, through my own learning, I was heading along the right lines or starting to pick up some bad habits.

You can tell Ian knows the workings of a mixing desk like the back of his hand, so he was adept at presenting the basic principles in clear and simple terms for us. Eq is used to create room in your mix, and compression and limiting allow you to add punch, crispness and volume.

The key to uniting these 3 elements is 'routing': The dynamic effect of eq, compression and limiting is affected by the order in which they are routed. Often it makes sense to group parts of your track together (for example your percussion parts); routing, using sends and buses, makes this possible and enables you to apply effects to multiple channels at once. What surprised me is the level of detail Ian was going into to get the sound perfect, sometimes eqing then running sounds through up to 3 compressors as well as a limiter. So it's clear to see how crucial it is to comprehend this technique.

Good mixing skills are all about practice. A producer's ear can only be refined by hour upon hour of listening, tweaking, listening again, then tweaking again... your ear never stops learning. But on top of that, your mixes must be based on a firm foundation of knowledge of the tools you are using. Within more creative aspects of production, the rules are there to be broken, but in the mix-down there are certain rules you must follow before you can achieve professional sounding results hence why this professionally taught course is so beneficial.

Introducing the Intensive 1 Year Music Production Diploma

For many of us, music is an important part of our lives. The idea of making a living through it though is something not too many people are prepared to take a chance on as it is so competitive - what are the chances of getting through and succeeding? Which is where Point Blank's new Intensive Music Production and Sound Engineering Diploma comes in.

Previously available as a 2-year part-time qualification, the 1 Year Diploma is full-time and comes with as much practice time as you can handle in Point Blank's state of the art studios. To enrol, students will need to demonstrate their suitability to this type of intensive course of study.

Along the way there will be plenty of industry connections being brought in to advise the students on how to achieve their potential. Recent visitors to the studios include Mark Ronson, Louie Vega, Felix from Basement Jaxx, Kylie producer Tommy D and Robbie Williams' songwriting partner Guy Chambers.

The Point Blank Forum is Here!

The forum has always been a crucial feature of the learning process for music production students at our online music school; A place where they can interact with their fellow students, share their latest tracks and probe their tutors for any extra nuggets of knowledge not covered in the course material. Until now however the only people with access to the forum have been the paying students. We figured that this was going against the raison d’etre of a forum… they should be open to all, encouraging as many as possible to interact with each other, and in doing so build up a buzzing community of people who share the same passion.

So we are excited to announce the Point Blank forum. It works just like any other forum out there, you can embed content from youtube and soundcloud, and add a unique signature which appears after all your posts (an ideal place to put your myspace details or your latest tune from soundcloud). It may be slightly slow going to begin with as we spread the word and let all our students, past and present know it exists but please stick with it. With your help this will hopefully become one of the liveliest and of course friendliest music forums out there.

So come along, introduce yourself and get chatting. Feel free to suggest any categories that you feel would benefit the forum too… the forum is all about you and we are always open to ideas!

Since their launch in 2009, we have been overwhelmed by the popularity of the Pro Producer courses here at Point Blank Online. The genres have spanned from Minimal Tech, Deep and Soulful House, Trance, Electro House, and most recently Dubstep and Hip Hop.

Developed with the more experienced producer in mind, they are perfect for anyone who wants to raise their music above the competition and focus their sound by learning advanced techniques typical to that genre. These are no means painting by numbers courses though; we encourage students to take the techniques learned and apply them to other styles of music to create their own unique style. You can hear some of the best student tracks created on the courses here, or by subscribing to the Point Blank Podcast on iTunes.

Music producers the world over have until 25th June to submit either an original tune or remixed piece, and the winner in return not only lands the opening slot in Perry’s dance stage at this years Lollapalooza, but also bags themselves a huge array of prizes not witnessed since the days of the Generation Game: two Pioneer CDJ900’s, a pair of Shure SE535 sound isolating earphones, a $250 gift certificate for SatelliteRecords.com, their tune/remix featured as a free download on SatelliteRecords.com homepage for one week, $1,000 cash, a Lollapalooza artist pass and artist guest pass, and a hotel for the duration of the Lollapalooza weekend. Point Blank At IMS Ibiza

Point Blank's very own Rob Cowan is currently sunnning himself on the beautiful island of Ibiza, but it's not simply a holiday, in fact Rob is visiting in order to take part in the annual International Music Summit hosted in Ibiza.

The IMS have pulled out all the stops, assembling an eclectic array of talent and bringing together a uniquely different festival line-up to Ibiza. Underlining the IMS mantra of being forward-thinking in everything they do. Artists in attendence this year include; Sasha, Buraka Som Sistema, Pete Tong, David Guetta, Annie Mac, Busy P and a whole lot more. The summit contains a mixture of panel talks with Q & A's and discussions, as well as live performances and DJ sets.

So with all this in mind, Point Blank's Rob Cowan has just been in a studio located within the IMS to see Hip Hop DJ extrodanire Mark Ronson and Dubstep pioneer Skream record a show for Ibizian station, Sonic Radio. It turns out that before the show kicked off there was some kind of technical difficulty which coulp have possibly meant the show wouldn't have gone ahead, however, luckily Rob was on hand to save the day! After some technical wizardry he managed to get the equipment working again and the radio show was back on track with just a minor delay.

We're all eagerly awaiting Rob's return with more stories of all the goings on at IMS Ibiza, in the meantime you can check out the photo above taken with Rob, Mark Ronson and Skream at the Sonic Radio Studios.

On the course you get to download the project file of a track produced exclusively by Paul for the course and find out exactly how it was created using only the instruments and plug-ins in Logic. You will also benefit from Direct Video Response (DVR) - weekly 1-2-1 video feedback on your own tracks from Paul himself.

Other new developments specifically for this course include our 'Beat Analysis' video tutorials in which we deconstruct classic Hip Hop beats by the likes of Dr. Dre, J Dilla, Timbaland, RZA and The Neptunes. Being able to properly mix-down your tracks is often the difference between amateur producers with potential and producers who are releasing their records. A track may sound good in your bedroom, but big club sound systems can be a lot more unforgiving, amplifying any imperfections in the mix.

Mixing techniques such as EQ, compression, effects, sidechaining and automation are vital to adding the necessary professional sheen to your tracks however they are by no means easy to comprehend, and this is usually the stage in the music production learning curve where people come un-stuck.

So as you’ve probably guessed, we at Point Blank have come up with a comprehensive 4 week course focussed on mixing electronic music. The course includes over 100 Quicktime tutorial videos and 40 Logic projects, and features music from pro producers Danny J. Lewis (Defected/Enzyme Blank), Mike Koglin (Noys), and Ben Medcalf (Rogue Element/Disco of Doom). They will demonstrate how to achieve a punchy professional mix that is guaranteed to detonate the dancefloor

Each week you can upload your projects and you will receive tailor-made, personalised video feedback from a professional producer on your music. On top of all this, you also get access to the student forums where you can share tips and advice, as well as a weekly web-chat with your tutor. The techniques covered can be applied to a wide range of electronic music genres.
